Is Aluminum Good For blanket insulation

When it comes to blanket insulation, aluminium is by far the most popular. In some homes, aluminium sheeting is used to insulate walls and floors, while in others it's used as a trim.

It comes in sheets, foil, tubes, sheets, and foil. The foil strips of aluminium are hung from the rafters to maintain the attic space in the attic. This is also commonly referred to as "blanket insulation".

Aluminium foil is not used much these days because it is very fragile. It can easily be torn or eaten by birds. You need to have enough layers for full attic coverage. Aluminium foil, such as "green foil" will not insulate well, even though it looks like it will.

Even though it is "green", it is still aluminium foil that does not have any protective coating on it to keep out dirt and moisture. This is what leads to the dreaded bowing of walls and ceilings.

Another problem with aluminium foil insulation is that it is quite expensive. The reason is that it is very thin that it takes up more room in the attic. Because of this, it is also necessary to use "peanuts" or strip insulation that is often three inches thick.

Blanket Insulation

If you have full attic coverage, then there is no need to worry about bowing. However, if you want to add insulation you will need to go down to half-inch or two-inch thicknesses, and you may need to buy several layers of insulation at one time.

Depending on the type of material you buy, you'll need to add another sheet of insulation to be finished. So, in essence, you will have to buy two layers of aluminium foil and a strip of insulation to add on top of it.

Unfortunately, this works out more expensive than buying fibreglass insulation. The reason is that fibreglass is sold in the sheets, not individually. Since you'll have to buy two or three sheets, your overall cost will be more expensive.

Aluminium foil can be added to the foam board. You can get foam board at a lumberyard for less than ten dollars a sheet. The other option is to use the newspaper as a backer board.

A newspaper is good because it can't be torn apart. If the insulation doesn't fit well it may pull away from the walls and create air leaks.

The insulation that was installed correctly can be kept very warm without the need for electric heat. In fact, you don't even need to have air conditioning in order to have blankets that stay cool during the summer.

When you're getting ready to put your new home up for sale, it may be wise to get an attic insulation expert to inspect it for you. He can tell you if aluminium foil is the best for the job if you need full attic coverage and how much to use for heat and how much for insulation.
